A free Word editor that runs in your browser
WorkFlo Write is a free online word processor for everyday documents. Start a blank page or open a .docx file, format it, and download it as a Word file or PDF. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
How it works
- Open WorkFlo Write and start typing, or drop a .docx file onto the page.
- Format with the toolbar: fonts, headings, lists, tables, images and alignment.
- Download as .docx, or print and save as PDF. Your work is also saved automatically in this browser.
What you get
Headings, bold, italic, underline, colours, highlights, alignment, bullet and numbered lists, tables and images.
Your draft is saved to this browser as you type, so a closed tab does not cost you your work.
Documents are processed inside your browser. They are not uploaded to our servers.
Cmd/Ctrl+B, I, U for styles, Cmd/Ctrl+Z to undo, Cmd/Ctrl+F to find and replace.
What this editor is good for
WorkFlo Write handles the documents most people write: letters, resumes, reports, meeting notes, assignments and simple contracts. It focuses on the formatting that covers nearly all of those cases and keeps the interface out of the way.
If your document depends on advanced layout such as text boxes anchored to pages, tracked changes, mail merge or complex section breaks, a desktop word processor is the better tool. We list exactly what is and is not supported below.
Why not just use a desktop app?
Sometimes you are on a borrowed laptop, a Chromebook or a phone, and installing software is not an option. A browser editor means you can open a file in seconds and download the result.
Limitations
We would rather you know before you start. These are the things this tool does not do or may not preserve:
- Headers, footers and page numbers are written into the .docx when you download it. They are shown as a preview strip on the editing page. In Print / PDF the header and footer text is best-effort: in our Chromium test it was missing from the first-page footer and last-page header, so download the .docx if you need exact placement.
- Tracked changes, comments, footnotes, text boxes and complex section layouts are not supported and may be dropped when importing.
- Fonts depend on what is installed on your device. A font that is missing will be substituted when the file is opened elsewhere.
Questions
Is WorkFlo Write really free?
Yes. There is no signup, subscription or paywall. The site is supported by advertising on pages outside the editor.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes for quick edits. A larger screen is more comfortable for long documents.
Is it affiliated with Microsoft?
No. WorkFlo is an independent product. It reads and writes the open DOCX file format.
