How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF

Number the pages of any PDF, choose the format and starting number, and keep numbering continuous across merged files.

Page numbers make longer documents easier to reference, print and reassemble. If your PDF lacks them, add them in a minute.

Steps

  • Open Add page numbers and choose the file.
  • Pick the position. Bottom centre is the classic choice; bottom right works well for printed handouts.
  • Choose a format: 1, Page 1, or 1 of 10.
  • Set the starting number, then add the numbers and download.

Numbering merged documents

Combine your files first with Merge PDF, then number the result, so numbering runs from start to finish.

Continuing from another file

If this PDF is the second part of a document, set the starting number to the next page. For a 12-page first part, start at 13.

Excluding a cover page

Split off the cover page, number the rest starting at 1, and merge the cover back on top. It takes a minute and gives a clean result.

Keep numbers clear of content

Numbers sit about 28 points from the page edge, which is clear of most margins. If your PDF has content near the bottom edge, use a top position instead.
