Add page numbers to a PDF

Number every page of a PDF. Pick the position, choose between plain numbers, "Page 3" or "3 of 12", and set the starting number for documents that continue from another file.

How to add Page Numbers in 3 steps

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Select position, format and starting number.
  3. Press Add page numbers and download.

Merged documents

If you combined several PDFs, add page numbers after merging so the sequence runs through the whole document. To continue numbering from an earlier part, set the starting number to the next value.

Placement tips

Bottom centre is the convention for reports. For documents that will be bound or printed double-sided, bottom right is a safe, readable choice. Numbers are placed 28 points from the page edge, which clears most printer margins.

Private by design

Add Page Numbers runs as code inside your browser tab. The file you choose is read from your device and the result is built on your device, so it is not sent to our servers or anyone else's. You can confirm this by watching the Network tab in your browser's developer tools while you use the tool.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the first page?

Not directly. Split off the cover first, number the rest, then merge them again.

Does it work with rotated pages?

Numbers are placed relative to the unrotated page, so on rotated pages they may appear at a different corner.
