How to Sign a PDF Electronically Without Printing

Add a drawn or typed signature to a PDF in minutes, and what to know about when an image signature is enough.

You do not need a printer and scanner to sign a document. You can place a signature on a PDF directly on your computer or phone.

Signing in a few steps

  • Open Sign PDF and choose your file.
  • Draw your signature with a mouse or finger, or type your name for a script-style signature.
  • Click the page where the signature line is, then use the text tool to add the date.
  • Save and download the signed copy.

What kind of signature is this?

The tool inserts an image of your signature. That is what most people mean by signing a PDF for a rental form, a school permission slip or a simple agreement. It is not a certificate-based digital signature, which also proves the document was not changed afterwards and identifies the signer.

When an image signature may not be enough

Rules differ by country and by document. Property transfers, some employment and financial documents, and government filings can require a specific signing service or certificate. When in doubt, ask the person asking for your signature what they accept.

Protecting the signed file

Once signed, you may want to stop casual edits. Adding an open password with Protect PDF controls who can read it. For filling in extra fields before you sign, use Edit PDF.

Several signers

Sign, download, and pass the new file on. Each person adds their own signature to the latest copy.
