Can You Redact a PDF by Covering Text With a White Box?
Why a white rectangle does not hide text, and a safer way to flatten a page before sharing.
Short answer: not safely. A white or black box drawn over text only sits on top of it. The text underneath is usually still in the file, and anyone can select, copy or extract it.
Why it is a real risk
People have accidentally published names, account numbers and addresses this way. Drawing a box is fine for cosmetic cleanup, but it is not redaction.
A safer approach: flatten the page
If you need information gone from a copy you are sharing, turn the pages into images first, then cover the sensitive parts, then make a PDF again.
- Convert the PDF with PDF to JPG.
- Cover the sensitive areas on the images with any editor, and save.
- Rebuild a PDF with JPG to PDF.
Now there is no hidden text layer to extract, because the pages are pictures.
Check your work
- Try selecting the covered area. Nothing should highlight.
- Search for a word you covered. It should not be found.
- Look at the file's size and page count.
The trade-off
The flattened copy cannot be searched or copied. That is the point, but it also means it is not suitable as your master file. Keep the original private.
When it truly matters
For legal, medical or government filings, follow the rules of the body you are filing with. They may require specific redaction software or processes. This is general information, not legal advice.
For harmless markup, such as notes and highlights, Edit PDF works well.
